Dr Andrew J. Veale

Founder and Primary Consultant

Aotearoa Conservation and Genomic Technologies is led by Andrew Veale, a wildlife ecologist and geneticist focused on one thing: turning complex science into decisions that work on the ground. Drawing on extensive experience across New Zealand’s invasive species and conservation programmes, the consultancy delivers clear, practical advice, to help clients achieve measurable environmental outcomes.

Previously he has been a wildlife ecologist and geneticist at Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research, where he led a research program focused on invasive species genomics. In this position he led the stoat and weasel genome sequencing projects, and led various invasive species genomics projects for organisations including PF2050, DOC, MPI, Tipu Mātoro, Te Korowai o Waiheke, Predator Free Taranaki, Predator Free Hawkes Bay, Predator Free Wellington, Capital Kiwi, and Predator Free Dunedin, among others.

Prior to that he was a Senior Lecturer in the Environmental and Animal Studies department at Unitec, and he held two postdoctoral positions: one focusing on the genomic basis of ecotype evolution in sockeye salmon at the University of British Columbia, and one on the genomic basis for wing-loss in alpine stoneflies at the University of Otago. His PhD was on the landscape genomics of stoats on New Zealand’s islands, and his MSc focused on the seascape genetics of marine invertebrates.

As well as genomics, he informs his conservation management advice with practical ecological studies, statistical and population modelling, and a range of population monitoring tools.
